My Uncle Alan was a young boy during the war. He grew up with rationing and food shortages - fruit was a luxury that hardly ever came his way.

At the age of 4 he was given his first banana. He was thrilled by the sight of this exciting and new piece of food. He took his first bite and spat it out in disgust. He never looked at a banana for the next 20 years. The reason for this violent reaction? He ate the banana with the skin on!!
