What i did`nt know was; that my two sisters and I were about to embark on a journey.
Mum and dad told us that we were to be evacuated to a farm in Aberystwyth in Wales. As a family we had always spent part of our school holidays in Wales so this news didn`t alarm us. However, we were going to be left with people who were unknown to us. Mum explained that it was for our safety as our house was close to the railway line which was used by trains carrying ammunition from the factory near the Liverpool docks. This meant that the railway line would be a target for the German planes.
When we arrived at the farm we were met by a lovely lady called Gwen. She took us to our room which had three single beds in it. This was new to us, at home my two sisters and I slept together in one large bed. The next morning Gwen took us to the dining room to have our breakfast. On the table were three bowls each with a small piece of what looked like loofah. My father scrubbed his back with a loofah and I was horrified to be given a jug of milk to pour over it and then to eat it. I ran screaming to the bedroom and would not come out untilvGwen explained it was a cereal called "shredded Wheat".
We went on to spend many happy months there until our parents came to take us home. The expected air raids had not materialised. This was the period known as the "Phoney War". When tha air raids did start we had our own air raid shelter in our garden to keep the family safe from attack. Foutunately, our family survived the war.
Now whenever I see a packet of Sredded Wheat on the supermarker shelf it brings the memories flooding back to the time I was evacuated.
