I was eight and playing football in the park when I heard a low, thuderous sound. I looked up to see the sky filled with bomber planes towing gliders along behind them. They were coming from the west going east over to the North Sea and eventually Holland. The planes filled the sky for about an hour and I was very excited.
Another story I remember was when a Decoter plane (an army plane used for bringing back wounded soldiers) flew overhead. It was circling us, preparing to land when it crashed at the top of the field in the allotments in a nearby tree. It had lost height and left massive grooves in the ground. We heard afterwards that all of the crew and soldiers had died.
Yet another event was when a massive barrage balloon fell into my infant school playground, luckily no one was hurt. Shortly after some people came and deflated the balloon and took it away in a truck.
Also I once saw a VII rocket land some distance away.
When the war had ended my street had a party to celebrate, we had a massive bonfire and an image of Hitler on a chair in the middle. We were all cheering and were very happy to finally end a truly devestating time.
