I lived in Park Road, Kempston from 1929 to 1955, when I got married.
On Tuesday and Thursday the Fish and Chip van would arrive just two doors from where I lived.
The chip van calling was always exciting generally we would have a penny bag of chips with plenty of salt and vinegar. The owner of the van was Mr Bitchener and he had a helper who would cook while he served.
This particular afternoon mum said go and get 2 portions of fish and 2 of chips and she gave me sixpence for the purchase.
Although the van was parked just a hundred yards from my back door, I somehow managed going from home to the van to lose the sixpenny piece.
Full of tears I had to say I had lost this precious money.
This sixpence was going to by the family tea. My mum, being the strong and loving lady she was, she must have found something else for tea that day. Even as young as I was, I knew that was a tragedy that day.
