As an evacuee of the tender age of 3 I found myself on a farm with several other children from differenet parts of the country. The farm lay on the flight path of some spitfire squadrons which would fly low over the farm from time to time. I remember an occasion when I was with the other children walking across the farm yard when a loud merlin engine was heard approaching. Within seconds the plane came in to view and the pilot saw us and made a steep dive just about fifty feet above us. He opened the canopy and waved. He was so low we could see his features and his smile as he passed us and the memory stays with me still.
