I was 2 years old when war broke out and my dad volunteered as he wanted to go in the Air Force he was trained as a commando he went to France on the 5th June before d day with barrage balloon unit. He was at Le Harve on Juno beach. He went through Europe Antwerp. My dad had a premonition just before D-day, with his kit already on his back, that he would not see one of his 3 children again. His youngest daughter was killed in a road accident, the family never recovered, my dad was shattered by his war experience, and he turned grey overnight. He managed to get one the day of the funeral, but he had to go back and cope with the war again, the tragedy made him an alcoholic together with six years of war, mother became ill and father who came home was a stranger. This is the effect of war on those that cannot come home.
