As I mentioned previously, owing to the state of the War, there was a leave ban on, so eventually some of us decided to "skip" camp and try to hitch home. I came out onto the main Yatesbury road and was lucky enough to get a hitch to Guildford,, where I got onto a train to Clandon - this is some 3 miles from my home, but my reason for doing this was because Clandon station is largely unmanned and I had no pass. I got onto to Guildford station with a platform ticket and made my way to Clandon. It was now quite late so I set off to walk home. en route I heard this peculiar noise, causing the hairs to stand up on the back of my neck, and I recalled that my mother had told me about the "doodlebugs". I hadn't heard one before; this one cut out and fell about 3 miles from where I was walking - I continued on and about 1a.m. I threw pebbles up to my parents' window and they were horrified to know I was home - AWOL AND having walked at that time of night! However, I think they were still pleased to see me.
