I lived at Meadowbrook Close, Norwich. I was a nurse before I married and would have liked to help during the war but I had three small children and a step son to look after by then. My husband worked very long hours at the flour mill at Carrow ‘he practically lived there’. Other people seemed to have much more exciting lives - my best friend Scarlet from Lowestoft was still nursing in London.
Some people were very unkind as he worked at home and did not go away to war. He also had to go on duty at the Royal Hotel.
We had a Morrison shelter in the garden but I used to stay in bed with the children at night. I was frightened to go out and it took too long to get everyone down there. We were no sooner in bed than the alarm went off.
We went to stay at my brother-in-law’s house but we were sent home to make room for Londoners. He was a village bobby.
We had to dig up the lawn to grow vegetables. I knitted clothes for the children and orders for a shop called Elizabeths which was run by two maiden ladies. I made shawls, fair isle and aaron jumpers.
I remember that three girls were killed by a stray bomb on Carrow Hill coming home from work.
