This story was submitted to the Peoples War site by Eileen Hallam.
From the age of 10 years old I was living in Anfeild. We would go down into the basement, as we didn鈥檛 have an air raid shelter.
When the war started my grandfather was stationed in Ruthin to make ammunition, my brother and I went to live with him.
We went to a welsh school where Some times we were accepted and some times we were not.
The blitz bombing damaged our street beyond recognition so we had to move to a new area completely.
A major source of entertainment for the children was to collect shrapnel and compare and trade it with the other children.
After the bombing raids I went to see my aunt in Walton. I remember seeing bodies being brought out of the buildings and the destroyed school. My aunt was quick to bring me in to her house and shield what I was able to see. She never spoke of it again.
We had a lodger who worked in the fire service who told us about a school that was bombed where there was water heaters in the basements, which caused people to by badly burned.
