I lived in a cul-de-sac in Bootle. William's Toffee Works was about 300 yards away and was bombed. They built a shelter in the street. All the children climbed the rubble for the toffee tins. We "pinched" sand from the air raid shelter builders and filled one tin with water and one tin with sand. We then placed one of each at each door in the street. At least we were doing something.
