This story was typed for Margaret by Paul Hudson of Derby Local Studies Library, during a special event at Blagreaves Library on 25 April 2005.
During the war I lived in a village near Nottingham, Burton Joyce. On the banks of the Trent there were smoke generators, making smoke by paraffin or oily rags. This created just smoke, no flames, and the idea was to hide the moonlight reflections in the river. It also created a really horrible smell, you could smell it for miles around.
In our village we had evacuees from Birmingham. There was no control as to where children went, they took the children round the houses and if you had room you took one or more. Most people wanted girls, because they thought the girls could help them with the housework. A 5 year old boy was left, so my Father took him home. His parents and uncle used to come and visit him. After the blitz children also came from Nottingham. However because it was so close they used to cycle or roller-skate home!
