Jean Pickles — neé Haworth’s Story

With my Father and Mother, I spent the week prior to the outbreak of war on holiday in Scarborough. On Thursday morning 30th August, a lorry pulled on to the sands laden with shovels, sacks and a hopper to which the sacks were attached. Two or three men started to fill the sacks with sand. Curious holidaymakers gathered round and on hearing that sand bags were needed to protect buildings etc, took up shovels and filled sacks. Mums, Dads, children, even me with my little bucket and spade.
