Here are a few memories I have of the war.
Sweet Coupons.
I seem to remember we got issued with sweet coupons at the beginning of each month. I would ‘spend’ mine straight away then spend the rest of the month begging of my family for theirs.
Gas Masks.
When they brought gas masks out everyone, adult and children were issued with them. We always had to carry them with us at all times in a little brown case. At school we had to check them every week, we did this by putting them on and somehow putting a piece of brown paper on the bottom of it. Sometimes the brown paper would stick on, but I remember mine didn’t, but I didn’t tell any one, as I was always so glad to get it off.
My little sister had to have a special baby’s gas mask, she had to lay in it and a cord was tightened around her waist to fasten it on her, she hated it and would scream and scream and this would upset me very much to have to see her so distressed.
