This contribution to People鈥檚 War was received by the Action Desk at 大象传媒 Radio Norfolk and submitted to the website with the permission and on behalf of Edward Arthur Plummer
This incident occurred towards the end of the War when we were being hit by V2 rockets. I was a pupil at Foust School in Epping Forest and in the school鈥檚 Army Cadet Force (JTC). We were attending an Army war film show at a factory in Walthamstow. I think the factory was called Gilsons, it was near a Pub called The Crooked Bill on the North Circular Road adjacent to the Greyhound Stadium.
The film show was being held in the factory canteen and the film was about the siege of Tobruk in the Western Desert. The film started out and the commentator said 鈥淵ou can now see the first shell landing on Torbruk鈥 when there was a whistling sound of a shell and a huge bang, the canteen roof disappeared and we were looking at the starry sky.
Apparently a V2 had landed nearby and between us and the explosives was a heavy machine shop which took most of the blast. That blast had ricocheted, gone upwards and taken our roof off. No one in the canteen was hurt 鈥 just shaken- some friends lived nearby and apart from a burning gas main were ok. Next day I had a dull stomach ache which lasted about four days, the Doctor said it was probably as a result of shock.
