Joyce鈥檚 mother wanted their Anderson Shelter located near the house, but a friend advised her to put the shelter at the end of the garden. One night during an air raid, the family moved from the house to the Andersons Shelter. Her brother remained in the house. A bomb was heard to explode and the windows were blown in. Her brother awoke with a start and rushed into the shelter at the bottom of the garden, leaping over the bomb crater that would have been the original location of the shelter.
In later years V1 Flying Bombs were regularly seen flying over on their way to London.
Denton Marshes was an area near the family home and Joyce鈥檚 brother befriended German POWs who were billeted there. On day his mother sent him out to get some cakes but, on his return, he felt sorry for the German POWs and gave the cakes to them.
