I was evacuated on the 1st September 1939, two days before war was declared. We formed at the Lawrence School in Mansford Street, Bethnal Green, and marched to Bethnal Green Station. From there we went off to the nearest station to our village.
My first memory once in Suffolk, was sitting outside the village hall waiting to be taken somewhere. We were picked up in a car by the chauffer of the local hall, which was Nether Hall, and we were taken to his house. His name was Pawsey. Unfortunatly we couldn't stay there too long because his wife was older and was not very well, and she couldn;t manage two young boys.
We then moved onto our next billet, and the family this time was called Feveyear. My next memory here was my brother telling me that there was no Father Christmas, but that it was mum and dad, and they would send us a parcel this year. We stayed here for sometime, but then moved on to another billet, which was the local vicarage.
We stayed here until the end of 1943, my brother had already left school by then and i was very homesick, so i saved up my pocket money and asked my dad to bring me home and i would pay my fare.
I got home, and went back to school in Bethnal Green until i was 14 and started work.
