They were preparing for D-Day. Tilbury was flooded with the army, tanks, everything. Soldiers in our backfield under canvas. There was a terrific storm and it was flooded- all the soldiers were wet. We were all putting their blankets through mangles, making tea and sandwiches. Tilbury was a drop off point. Every field was jam packed with soldiers. Tilbury people done our bit, was kind hearted and tried to help them. We all waved them good-bye.
