We were in Kingston On Thames, it was not evacuated or a reception place so we weren鈥檛 sent away. There was 3 of us I was 13 years old when the war broke out and my two younger brothers were 11 and 8.
During the blitz we spent all our nights in the shelter in our garden until it all got quieter then we went back into the house. When the sirens went we鈥檇 go.
There was hardly any damage around us, the nearest bomb was 录 of a mile away. We lost our windows and could feel a lot of shaking. We felt like we were going to fall out of our bunks.
The government gave us wood to make the bunks with and thick netting to bind around the edges like a mattress. That was better than when we first went into the shelter and our beds were made of different sized orange boxes. I don鈥檛 think my parents got much sleep, but we did.
My Dad was an ARP and used to have to put his metal hat on and go out while air raids were happening. Us kids took life as it came but our parents did the worrying, it was hard on them.
Our schools closed for a bit, not for long, we had many lessons down in the shelters at schools, they were long ones.
