Martin Pavey Roberts in his Chindit Uniform Date Prob. 1943 or '44?
This is a picture of Marin Pavey Roberts D.O.B.26/08/1923. He was a Chindit (Royal Signals) and I believe part of The 1st South Stafford under Major R Degg and part of Brigider M Calvert 77th Indian Brigade. Before the war he lived in Penn, Wolverhampton. I wonder If any one recognises him or could tell me what he did during the war? I never knew my Great Uncle Martin as he struggled to survive the jungle and Japs only to be killed once back in England in 1946/7. On returning from Burma he worked as part of the No. 9 maintenance unit. Martin was killed in an accident at work whilst breaking up aeroplanes for scrap at RAF Cosford near Wolverhampton. He was asfixiated after someone mixed up the cleaning fluid in the wrong mannor. It was a terrible loss for the Roberts family after there son had only just returned from the East. The letter of sympathy from A Civil Assistant and Accountant granting Martins back dated pay to the family is dated 27th August, 1948 but this may have been sent sometime after his death. My Grandmother (Martins sister) who was aprox. 19 at the time believes he died in either 46 or 47 which would have made him in his early to mid 20s. Any information about Martin's or other Chindit's watime experience would be gratefully recieved as I am currently researching for a university disertation on the Chindits in Burma.
