At the end of the war some young children didn鈥檛 know what a banana was because they鈥檇 never seen one during the war. When sweets appeared in town, children rushed up to cue for some.
I felt very honoured at school one day when the headmistress asked me to write on the corridor blackboard that it was D-day and the allies had landed in France.
