John Baker who was known as 'Jack', was my father. He died of a brain tumour in 1965 when I was seventeen. I was born in April 1948. My elder sister, Marlene was born in 1941.
Sometimes, just sometime, I could get my father to talk about the war. He told me about how his oldest brother was 'called up', and that he and his other brother's decided that they could not let him fight alone, so decided to volunteer for the army to try to help.
Jack was married to Doris and they lived in Barton Hill in Bristol.
When he reported for duty on the parade ground with many other new recruits an officer asked if any of them could drive. Jack said 'I can sir'! His mate next to him whispered 'you can't drive Jack!' 'I know said Jack, but I'm not f...ing walking!'
To his amazement Jack was given a tank transporter and had to learn to drive fast!
One day Jack found himself on the beach at Dunkirk.
