On Saturday mornings I used to have to get up early and go to the local butcher and queue for non-ration meat, such as oxtail, offal, pig trotters and pig tails. I had to do that before I was allowed to go to the Saturday morning pictures.
We used to watch Laurel & Hardy or Old Mother Riley followed by an episode of something like the Lone Ranger, Dan Dare or Hop along Cassidy.
Saturday morning was kids’ cinema. We didn’t have many sweets because they were rationed, but cough lozenges weren’t rationed so we used to eat them instead. We could also get ice cream, but not the real thing as it was made with artificial milk so it always tasted a bit funny.
