I joined the army in 1942. After training I was sent to Bedworth, outside of Coventry to a gun site with heavy AA 534 Battery. Next we were moved down South 1944. We went by train to Malden Essex. Trucks took us to a field at Wierford. We had troops from all services arrive to pitch our tents for us to live in. Everything was under canvas.

Equipment arrived and we were soon learning to operate the new controls. Then it all happened, the first of the German V1 ‘doodlebugs’ began to fly over head on way to London. We started fighting back. We were still under canvas with plenty of mud around. This was leaked to a national newspaper with the pictures on the front page. We were then moved to the Town Hall in Maldon with our bedding and kit. The builders moved in to the gun site to start building new billets. Soon the V2s started to fly over. We stayed until the end. The bombings stopped and I was demobbed in 1946.
