It was 1942 when Coventry was bombed and the remaining 3 bombs were used on Reading. On this particular day I was working at a shop called Wellstein鈥檚 at the time as a Secretary Assistant. On a Wednesday I would normally work till 1pm then go home. On this day a bomb was dropped at 1.30pm on my office so I had just missed it. I was only 14 at the time and was very upset because my office had gone.
At the same time, my father was by the People鈥檚 Pantry in Friar Street and the bomb was dropped on there, just missing my father. Also that day, at the same time my mother was in Cheapside where the theatre was and another bomb was dropped in that area, just missing her. To think that on the same day we could have all been hurt and this all happened within 10 minutes of each other.

Message 1 - Coventry

Posted on: 18 November 2005 by Peter - WW2 Site Helper

Dear Joyce

You are confusing two quite separate events. Coventry was bombed on the night of 14 November 1940. All attacking aircraft dropped their bombs, in all a total of 503 tons of high explosive (HE) bombs and 881 incendiary cannisters from 449 aircraft. That was the major raid, but they returned to bomb Coventry on the night of 8 April 1940 - in this second raid a further 315 tons of HE bombs and 710 incendiary cannisters were dropped from 237 bombers. There were no attacks on Coventry in 1942.

Regards,
Peter Ghiringhelli
