When war was declared I was living in Guildford and did not comprehend what this meant - I was 15 at the time. After about a week there was a warning siren and everyone disappeared down the shelters. All clear went after about 30mins and normality resumed.
I was called up in 1942 and joined the RAF and did my basic training at Blackpool. I then did radio operators training at Yatesbury, Wiltshire.
I also did a gunnery course and joined 617 Squadron in Aug 1944.
Operations took me to Germany, Norway and enemy occupied countries in Lancaster Bombers. I was on the Turpitz raid in Nov 1944 when that ship was sunk
After the War in Europe was over I was posted to India for the Japanese Campaign but that ended before we arrived
