In June 1944 my mum Grace Cole who is now 79 was working in the co-op which was next door to charlton railway station. She had just put a display of eggs in the window when the sound of a doodlebug could be heard. Everyone carried on as usual hoping it would pass over, but suddenly there was a enemous explosion, everyone was screaming, part of the cieling had come down there was dust everywhere. My mum was very shocked and covered in dust. The doodlebug had hit the railway station which was next door. The most awful thing was a train was in the station. She remembers there was a young girl standing at the marble counter at the time chatting, the marble counter had lifted up and had come down on the young girls feet. The butcher could not be found, but was found later in the freezer, he had frozen. My mum remembers that it was her turn to make the tea, but because she was busy displaying the eggs she would leave it to later, lucky she did because if she had been making the tea, that part of the roof had been destroyed and she would of been killed. She remembers that the station master had also been killed. Soon word got to my mums family who came rushing down Charlton Lane to find out if my mum was injured. She remembers that as soon as her father came she broke down and screamed, the reality of the disaster had hit her. She often wonders if anyone remembers her or the direct hit of the doodlebug on Charlton Railway station
