My name is Audrey May Pugh (known as May) and here are four of my memories from that time as told to my youngest daughter Liz.
Our family lived in the village of Bunny, in Nottinghamshire. It was approximately 1943/44 and I would have been 11 or 12 years of age.
My brother (Colin), 2 sisters (Bet and Dot) and I, would often see Army trucks driving through the village, carrying Italian POWs, possibly taking them to work on the land. I believe there was an army base in nearby Ruddington. The POWs would wave at us, but my elder sister disliked them and would spit on the ground and stamp on it with her foot!
Whenever there was an air-raid warning, we would have to run to the local farmhouse and hide under their large wooden kitchen table.
Our local butcher used to deliver our meat ration to our house. I remember us being given some mutton, which was so fatty and inedible, my father buried it in the garden.
When the American鈥檚 came to our area, they would drive past and throw chewing gum to us - this was a real treat. This would often land in the ditches, but me and other children would jump in to retrieve them.
