My father 4040026 George Henry Neal enlisted into 6thBn KSLI 17/07/40 this infantry battalion was converted to 181 Field Regt RA 0n 01/03/42 went to France D-Day plus 6 and fought all the way to Hamburg where my Father was demobbed in January 1946.
My Dad died in 1990 he never talked about the war, so i always assumed he never had much of a part in it. A few years after he died and inspired by a friend who was experienced in military research, I decided to try and find out what he had been up to.
What I discovered over the following six years astonished me.Not only had my father took an active part in the war, but his Field Regiment was affiliated to the 15th Scottish Division,, untried in battle this Division Blazed a path of glory across Europe as a spearhead Division which landed on D-Day +6.The following 6 years research resulted in the publication of my book in 2001 "Guns And Bugles", where the full story of the 6th Battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry and later 181 Field Regiment RA can be read, the book has been accepted as the official history of both units by the KSLI Museum in Shrewsbury. The story continues through the voices and photographs of ex-members of the 15th(S) Division and those of family members, on my own website www.gunsandbugles.com I would be delighted to hear from any one connected to this fine Division.
