I worked on the electricity supply at the Enfield Royal Small arm factory where they made the Lee Enfield rifle and the Bren gun. In 1937 we were put on to three shifts as they knew that a war was coming.

I joined the Territorial Army in 1938 in London. As an electrical engineer, I worked on the installation and repair of the anti aircraft guns. I had the rank of Staff Sergeant.

There was a lot of bombing, particularly around the docks. The Surrey, Victoria and Albert Docks were all burned to the ground. It was very frightening.

I got married in the 1940, on April 20th. I didn鈥檛 find out until later that it was Hitler鈥檚 birthday.
