I was three years old when war started so my stories are rather 鈥渟tories told鈥.

I do remember during a raid on Midlothian being loaded into a cage and descending a coal mine as there were no shelters nearby.

There was also an incident near the Forth Road Bridge when German bombers were bombing Rosyth dockyards and as children we had to run for cover from the machine guns.

Once, when visiting friends who had a young baby, there was a rumoured gas attack. We all had gas masks but there was nothing for the baby.

It was understood that ammonia would counteract the gas, so a cloth was dunked into a 鈥減otty鈥 which had been used by one of the older children and planted on the poor baby.

Needless to say there was no gas attack and the unfortunate child did survive!
