I had moved from Bradford to Lincoln. One night the air-raid warning sounded and there were sounds of bombs dropping on Waddington (just outside Lincoln) where there was a large R.A.F. station. There was returning fire of course. Suddenly the house shook as there was a huge bang. Later we learned that a land mine had been dropped. Every house in the village (except where I lived)was damaged, but the mine had hit Waddington church, which was very large, and so took most of the impact. This undoubtably saved many lives in the village. People were killed on the airfield though by the bombs and the gunfire
