I was ten years old at the outset of the war, living in Yorkshire. As a girl guide I used to make camouflage nets, and knitted for the army, navy and the air force various articles including scarves, mittens, etc. At school we adopted a minesweeper. I also wrote to one of the sailors and knitted him a pair of sea boot socks. Sadly the minesweeper hit a mine and they all died. As a girl I was heart broken. Twice a week we used to have a knitting session and someone always read a story. It always ended with a cliff hanger, so it would entice you back again.
