Marriage and birth:
I was working at the Co-op Brush Factory in Chapel Lane at the outbreak of World War Two. When I married in 1942 I was living in Pople Street, Wymondham. Our son was born in December 1942 and Edward, my husband, was allowed home to see his son when he was two weeks old. He was then immediately sent to the Middle East.
Husband’s War:
Edward spent the next two and a half years fighting in Egypt, Tunisia, Palestine and Italy and not to see his family in all that time.
Audrey’s War:
For the two and a half years that Edward was away it was difficult looking after Brian alone. I had been fostered so there was no family support. With the baby to look after I did not work, although acquaintances with no children were in the Land Army. I saw a photograph of one, Freda Wicks, in the local paper recently.
Raids:
I remember The Lizard being bombed. There were no casualties — the railway must have been the target.
Husband’s return:
My husband survived the war and came home to us and saw his son grow up. Edward died in 1971 and I married Albert Downes who died in 1983.
