Ben Town was 38 when he re-enlisted in the British army in 1940 (he had previously served 12 years with the Yorks & Lancs in Mesopatamia and India 1919-31) but his posting this time was to the RAOC.
Ben was a Divorcee who was raising 2 little sons, the boys were to be cared-for and educated at a military school/orphanage associated with the RAOC Chilwell barracks in Nottingamshire while was away.
Ben saw action with the 8th army in North Africa,Sicily and Italy gradualy gaining the rank of Sgt: he was for a time a regimental boxing champion and was wounded in action not far from Anzio.
On his eventual return to England he was reunited with his now growing sons and was posted back to Chilwell barracks where he met and fell in love with Evelyn Arfield who was herself a Sgt with the ATS, they married in June 1945 and were both honourably discharged in December 1945.
Ben, Evelyn and the boys went to live in Sheffield Yorkshire where they started a new life and added to their family.
They were proud 'husband and wife' Veterans who wore their Medals with pride on
Rememberence Sunday parades.
