I was 9 years old when war broke out, I lived opposite Fazakerley Hospital. There was a cottage in the grounds called Gores Farm Cottage, this was badly damaged by a bomb, but was shored up and continued to trade as a general store for some time before eventually being knocked down. Fazakerley Hospital was bombed by planes on route to Kirkby Admissions factory, I often saw dog-fights in the sky. We had an Anderson shelter in the garden and we would cover the shelter in grass sods for extra protection.
We went to school as normal - but, some workers would allocate a room in their house to be used as a classroom and a teacher would come to give us lessons.
