During the German air raids over Liverpool in 1941, my father (Ernest) was working for Ellermans Shipping Line in Tower Building, Water Street. After work, he would do fire watch duties. On duty nights, both myself and my sister (Marjore) would be in the basement of Tower Building during the 1941 air raids.
We passed the time away climbing up and down the steel ladders attached to the basement walls.
What simple pleasures we enjoyed. Fate stepped in on one occasion when Tower Building was badly bombed and people were killed and injured. That one night we did not shelter there, but stayed in a local air raid shelter instead. We heard later how badly Tower Buildings were hit, with all the numbers of people killed. How very sad! That's fate!
