I was an Air Raid Precaution warden looking after people and checking if they were OK after a raid. I was a warden for the duration of the war. I remember when I was walking out with another warden and looking up in the sky we saw a big white parpachute coming down. I blew my whistle to alert the rest of the wardens. In the parachute there were 6 little bags of dynamite intended to burn someone's house. They fell to the ground and I picked them up and gave them to the Home Guard office who investigated them.
I was married just before the war. My husband was called up and went abroad for 6 years. I was evacuated to Lancaster for a few months.
I remember rationing - 2 ounces of this and 2 ounces of that - but we always had plenty of rabbit. Fruit was only available if you were pregnant. I remember another family who were friendly with a GI and used to get boxes of chocolate and bars of chocolate. I received 拢2 weekly army pay and I had to stretch that - no luxuries.
Every window had black-out curtains - not even a candle was allowed. Any glimmer of light and you risked being bombed.
