We lived on Werrington Estate in the Lodge owned by Commander A M Williams. My father (Christopher Barrett) was a gamekeeper. Food was scarce, we had rabbits and pigeons and tilled our own vegetables. Mother (Stephanie Barrett) would send me out to pick elderberries so she could use them in her baking instead of currants.
