I was on the sloop HMS Whimbrel which is in the news now as they鈥檝e just bought it back from the Egyptians and bringing it home to be restored.
I travelled with the Russian Convoys, Newfoundland and many other places but one of the best shore leaves ever was West Hartlepool. We were the first ship in there and all the pubs and clubs were full of women, no men, just women, a sailor鈥檚 delight.

When we docked in Malta if you asked a young girl out she鈥檇 turn up in her best frock and with her mother!
