In 1942 my husband was in Malaya and was not allowed to rejoin his regiment in England but was allowed to train as a pilot in Singapore as they were short of pilots in the UK.
They had Buffalo aircraft in Singapore and the Japanese had shot them all down, and had also bombed Kallang Airport which was closed as a result. All the young trainee pilots were filling in holes on the airstrip when along comes an aeroplane and lands on the empty airstrip. Out steps General Wavell and his ADC, very upset about no official welcome.
The Lance Corporal put Wavell in his sports car and the ADC in the dickie and drove them off to Fort Canning, Army HQ, who were given a great dressing down by Wavell for not meeting him properly.
