I was 3 years old when the war broke out. My memories are of my dad building the Anderson Shelter in the garden and the six bunk beds made of cheap wood with metal webbing to sleep on. We lived between Kenley Aerodrome and Biggen Hill, Croydon. We would watch the spitfires going over heads heading out to the coast. We lived in a small village called Hooley. A doodlebug dropped on the houses behind us and shattered most of the windows in our house, bringing the bedroom ceilings down. We had all gone to the shelter in the garden.
