It was the early 1940's and Connie was working with a number of young girls in Carr's, a fashionable clothing store on Northumberland Street in Newcastle. One afternoon the store received a very special guest, Al Bowley, a well known singer and performer. Al had come into the shop to visit Mrs Carr, who was a good friend of his. Connie and the other girls in the shop were very excited and asked Mrs Carr if Al might be able to sing a song for them. Al was happy to oblige and sang to them right in the middle of the shop.
It's possible that this could have been Al's last public performance, for not long after he sang to Connie and her friends in that shop, Al was killed in London during the air raids.
(John Abbot speaking for his wife Constance Abbot.)
