You might imagine that the sound of a piston engine overhead would keep a child awake. Not me! For years, it was a sound that would lull me to sleep.
I was born in 1942, so my memories of the war are very sketchy. But I do remember living at our home in East Bergholt, 21 miles from the US air base at Wenham and Raydon Aerodrome, near Ipswich in Suffolk. I always remember the sound of the fighter Mustangs and Thunderbolts -- US craft -- taking off and landing as I went to sleep and woke up in the morning. It was the soundtrack of the war for me.
For years, the sounds of a piston engine plane reminded me of war. It was almost comforting.
