This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by a volunteer from 大象传媒 Radio Berkshire on behalf of Tom Barber and has been added to the site with his/her permission. Tom Barber fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

In 1944, I heard it coming and then all of a sudden there was a big bang. I was living on Crowthorne Road near Wellington College at the time, working at Broadmoor doing maintenance. My wife was in the bath, I hid under the table when I heard the noise. A bomb hit Wellington College, I believe it killed the master. (I was in my forties at the time). I couldn鈥檛 see anything at all as it was dark at the time. In the morning I didn鈥檛 want to look at the College as I knew it would be bad.

In Broadmoor I had to make the place safe. We had a curtain down to the floor in the door way because of the gas. I was there several years. We had a half inch mesh round the glass on the bottom floor to save the glass being blown out. We saw planes going over head all the time but they too far away to see if they were German or British. When I worked there it was called a lunatic asylum. My brother, sister and my wife worked there too.

I am now 94 years old and at Pinehurst.
