It was 1945 and I was 11 years old. I still have the most vivid memory of the return from the war of my uncle Albert Edward Lowndes, named after the king and brother to my mother Jessie Lowndes.
My Uncle had been in the Eighth Army, and had been at Dunkirk in the evacuation. He had saved the life of a young wounded soldier by swimming with him on his back from the beach to the ship.
He had also been fighting in Italy, and had horrendous stories about a woman wheeling her dead baby in the pram and she wouldn't allow anyone to take it from her.
These stories have stayed with me along with a bracelet, which my Uncle brought back for me from Italy and is one of my most precious possessions.
My Uncle died almost 10 years ago. He was just one of the brave soldiers who came home.
