When I was billeted at Collingham in Nottinghamshire as a Land Army girl we would mix in the village and were always made very welcome. I think some of the wives were very lonely when their husbands were away and they were pleased to have someone to talk to. We made some firm friends.
My wages were 拢1.1/6d a week and out of that I used to send 10 shillings home to mum. She found things difficult with younger children to care for and dad away. Mother used to clean and take washing in. My brothers and sister always remembered the wet washing drying all over the house in the winter months.
I was left with 11/6d which I suppose was a lot of money just for me. We were supplied with outer clothes and footwear but bought our own Sunday/church clothes when coupons allowed. I managed to save a bit and also went to the pictures and bought a few treats now and then.
