In 1941 there was a convoy passing through the village and an anti aircraft gun was left behind for a few days with two soldiers.
The 3rd night a German bomber came over having lost his way from Glasgow, on seeing the Solway, they followed it and started dropping his bombs, killing several cows on a farm. A sister and a brother in a house were blown out of a window and the house was demolished. The brother was killed by the blast. The aircraft gunners could see the pilot in the plane but couldn鈥檛 fie because it was stationed in the center of the village. It took 5 days for someone to take the gun away, there were lots of huts left and were frightened that they would destroy us, it only took 2 hours but it was a baptism of war.
