My father was one of only two young soldiers to know that a huge contingent of troops were off to North Africa.
How did that happen? My father was Batman/driver to Brigadier Callaghan of the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots fusiliers and they were to be visited by King George 6, and my father served tea and biscuits in a small tent in Southern England. They were all told about the impending North African campain and the King wished them all well and shook hands in an informal atmosphere with all present including my father. I have a signed letter from the Brigadier confirming the event, which he gave to my father after the war.
