Identity Card front cover.

There were all manner of personal documents - Ration books with coupons for food and clothing, Passes and of course each of us had one of these - an Identity Card.

On the back of the pantry door hung a long sheet of paper on which Divi Coupons issued with a purchase from the Co-op were stuck. It was an occasion to go up to the Co-op and join the inevitable queue on Divi Day to collect the dividend accumulated over the year. There were no calculators in use and the girls behind the accounts window put mental arithmetic into practical use.

I never did understand how it was that despite all the careful use of ration coupons you could go on to Ilkeston market where some stalls sold lots of stuff supposedly only available on ration.
