martin on duty as a despatch rider burma
This story is about my dad Martin Rowe, who volunteered at the start of the war even though he was a miner so was in a reserved occupation, working at a pit in Mossblown Ayrshire.
He served in The Royal Artillery for the duration of the war ,was promoted to corporal, sent to India and Burma, and served in all 3 Burma campaigns. He spent some time in hospital with malaria and pneumonia.
He didn't tell me a great deal about his time in the army, apart from recalling this incident. He was a despatch rider and was riding his motorbike along the waters edge when in the twilight he saw what he thought was a group of enemy soldiers. He stopped and crouched down behind his motorbike and pulled out his pistol. He said he felt the hairs on the back of his head stand up and he thought his time was up. As the group came closer he realised it was a herd of bullocks. He did recall this story quite often, due to the fact that he must have felt it was amusing but also because of the relief he felt.
I am proud of my dad for what he did and just wanted to make a mention of it for future generations.
